Two new studies contain disappointing news for people who’ve undergone colon cancer treatment.
Colon cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer death in the United States, according to background information in the JNCI study.
As many as 80 percent of people diagnosed with colon cancer have localized disease, which means at the time of surgery, it appears that the cancer hasn’t spread to other sites.
When colon cancer is surgically removed, surgeons also remove surrounding lymph nodes to look for any signs that the cancer has spread.
The first study, published in the Sept. 9 online edition of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute (JNCI), found that just 38 percent of U.S. hospitals sampled were testing enough lymph nodes after colon cancer surgery to accurately assess the extent to which the disease had spread.
The second study, in the Oct. 15 issue of the journal Cancer, found that only 40 percent of people who’d been successfully treated for colon cancer were receiving all of the recommended follow-up tests.
Of the first study, Dr. Durado Brooks, director of prostate and colorectal cancer for the American Cancer Society, said, “It’s concerning that such a low percentage of hospitals are in compliance.”

As might be expected, lung and bronchial cancer accounted for nearly half the cases but cancers of the larynx, mouth and pharynx, esophagus, stomach, pancreas, kidney, bladder, cervix, as well as acute myelogenous leukemia are also caused by tobacco, the CDC found.
“The data in this report provides additional, strong evidence of the serious harm related to tobacco,” said Sherri Stewart of the CDC’s Division of Cancer Prevention and Control, who led the study.
Stewart’s team looked at cancer surveys and registries covering 92 percent of the U.S. population.
Kentucky had the highest rates of lung cancer among men and women, while Western states with low rates of smoking also had low rates of cancer.
Tobacco-related cancers were more common among blacks, non-Hispanic whites and men, reflecting the groups that use tobacco more, the CDC found.
“Tobacco use is the leading preventable cause of disease and premature death in the United States and the most prominent cause of cancer,” said the CDC’s Dr. Matthew McKenna.

Men who have too much calcium in their bloodstreams may have an increased risk of fatal prostate cancer, according to a new analysis from Wake Forest University School of Medicine and the University of Wisconsin.
“We show that men in upper range of the normal distribution of serum calcium subsequently have an almost three-fold increased risk for fatal prostate cancer,” said Gary G. Schwartz, Ph.D., associate professor of cancer biology and of epidemiology and prevention at Wake Forest. Such excess calcium can be lowered, he said.
Co-author Halcyon G. Skinner of the School of Medicine and Public Health at the University of Wisconsin stressed there is “little relationship between calcium in the diet and calcium in serum. So men needn’t be concerned about reducing their ordinary dietary intakes of calcium.”
Schwartz and Skinner analyzed the results of 2,814 men who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES-1). Measurement of the amount of calcium in the bloodstreams was determined an average of 9.9 years before prostate cancer was diagnosed.
The researchers focused on the 85 cases of prostate cancer and 25 prostate cancer deaths among the 2,814 men and divided the group into thirds, based on the serum calcium level.

On their surfaces, both cell types have triggers — androgen receptors — that fire when they encounter sex hormones. Triggering androgen receptors has different effects in each cell type.

Early recognition and treatment of alcohol withdrawal syndrome can improve the outcomes of patients with head and neck cancer, researchers report in the Archives of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery.
The alcohol withdrawal syndrome includes several symptoms seen in persons who stop drinking alcohol after continuous and heavy use. Milder forms of the syndrome include seizures, tremulousness, and hallucinations, usually occurring within 6 to 48 hours after the last drink.
“Alcohol withdrawal syndrome in the postoperative, post-traumatic and other inpatient settings is a potentially life-threatening condition that is difficult to identify in its early stages and difficult to treat in its later stages,” senior investigator Dr. Theodoros N. Teknos told.
“In this study,” he added, “we employed a standardized treatment protocol which identified at-risk patients early and began treatment at the first signs of alcohol withdrawal syndrome.”
Teknos of the University of Michigan Health System, Ann Arbor, and colleagues screened postoperative patients, initially using an alcohol consumption questionnaire, and identified 26 at risk for alcohol withdrawal syndrome.
Two of the selected patients showed no signs of alcohol withdrawal syndrome and three who did not meet alcohol withdrawal syndrome criteria were enrolled late after they began to develop symptoms.
