Bone Marrow Cancer

Bone marrow cancer is defined as the cancerous growth of cell or malignant cells which develop in the blood forming cells of the bone marrow which is the soft tissue in the center of the bones in the body.

It is important to note that bone marrow cancer includes leukemias, multiple myeloma, and others.

Types of Bone Marrow Cancer

There are two types of bone marrow cancer the first being the primary bone cancer and the secondary bone cancer. The later one is formed when the cancer spreads from the other affected organ or metastasizes.

This is most common type of bone marrow cancer, the former type of less common in adults and is more common is children. It originates in the bone itself haven’t spread from anywhere.

Primary Bone Marrow Cancer

The primary bone marrow cancer which originates in the bone itself hasn’t spread from any other region or organ is further classified into two types the Ewing’s sarcoma and the Osteosarcoma. The former is less common and the later is more common.

Bone Marrow Cancer Symptoms

This bone marrow cancer is more common in long bones like the arm and the leg bones. Pain is considered as the common symptom of this cancer. Although the bone marrow cancer symptoms differ from patient to patient there are certain common bone marrow cancer symptoms which are mentioned as below:

  • Pain in the bones
  • Fever
  • Fatigue or weakness
  • Loss of appetite
  • Unwanted and unknown reduction in weight
  • A hard lump on the bone
  • Interfering with the normal movements
  • Breakage of bones or unexplained fractures

The bone marrow cancer symptoms are described as silent as they are not so evident in the early stage of the disease, in most of the cases this cancer does not show any predictable symptoms until and unless it has spread to the other parts making it very difficult for treatment.

Bone Marrow Cancer Treatment

Generally for treating any type of cancer the age of the patient, the stage of the cancer and the overall health of the patient are considered. These factors are considered to find the most effective treatment for this type of cancer effected patient. The treatment methods available are surgery, radiation therapy and the chemotherapy.

The radiation therapy will definitely be an intensity modulated procedure and chemotherapy will be demonstrated in fractionated dose of course. However many alternative therapies have also come into picture along with the standard treatment therapies in order to yield better recovery results.

But then it is very important to take the advice of the doctor before trying to take these alternative methods of treatments for better understanding of their effects and the procedures.
