Battle Against Fungal Infections With Breast Cancer Drug

tamoxifenAccording to recent reports, an FDA approved drug, tamoxifen, used for preventing the re-occurrence of breast cancer shows effective results in fighting against life threatening fungal infections in cancer patients.

Some scientists believe that tamoxifen has certain antifungal properties and a new research from the University Of Rochester Medical Center proves that it can potentially kill infectious cells and stops the infection.

“It’s still early, but if tamoxifen, or molecules like it, turns out to be an effective treatment against serious fungal infections, it’ll be a welcome addition to our arsenal,” said Damian Krysan, M.D., Ph.D., author of the research recently published in the journal Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy and assistant professor of Pediatrics at the University Of Rochester Medical Center.
