Some breast cancer medications can be used to treat the breast cancer.
SERMs (selective estrogen-receptor modulators) are the one of the best used breast cancer medications.
This drug is having resemblance with the estrogen hormone.
Most of the cancers are the estrogen-dependent that means they are dependent on estrogen to survive and to reproduce.
As the SERMs mimic estrogen, they can bind the estrogen receptors in the breast cancer cells. They block the estrogen from breast cancer cells by binding to these receptors, making the cancer cells to starve.
Tamoxifen (brand name, Nolvadex) is the most commonly prescribed SERM. Tamoxifen is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat both early and advanced stages of breast cancer.
It is also approved by FDA for post-menopausal women who are at high risk of breast cancer. It can reduce the risk of breast cancer by 49%.
The drug Fareston (generic name, toremifene) is used to treat the breast cancer. Evista (generic name, raloxifene) is used to treat osteoporosis, a degenerative bone disease. Arzoxifene for the treatment of breast cancer is made by the same company as raloxifene (Eli Lilly and Company.)
Biologic response modifiers: These drugs bind with protein on breast cancer cells to prevent their growth. The drug Herceptin (generic name, trastuzumab) is a monoclonal antibody, a protein found on breast cancer cells. Approximately 30% of breast cancer patients with extra copies of HER2 protein can signal more aggressive cancers.
Herceptin binds to HER2 receptors preventing them from dividing and growing. Herceptin is indicated for breast cancer patients when HER2 protein is over expressed.
Aromatase inhibitors: This drug helps to bind to the body aromatase enzyme that produces estrogen. Many cancer cells depend on this for their growth and for multiplying quickly. Estrogen cannot be produced by the enzyme once the aromatase inhibitor has binded to the aromatase enzyme.
In order to treat advanced breast cancer, several aromatase inhibitors are used. Some aromatase inhibitors may be more effective than tamoxifen to treat advanced breast cancer and it can be useful after patients become resistant to tamoxifen.
Femara was recently FDA approved as an initial treatment option. Arimidex and Femara can be more effective than Megace for treating breast cancer.
Other hormonal therapies are used to treat breast cancers that are dependent on estrogen for survival. There are several other hormonal therapies in addition to SERMs and aromatase inhibitors to treat breast cancer.
The drug Zoladex (generic name, goserelin acetate) is a synthetic form of lutenizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH). Hormone therapy, Faslodex (generic name, fulvestrant), appears to be effective for women who are resistant to tamoxifen. Zoladex blocks the release of estrogen preventing breast and prostate cancer cells from growing.
Hence, you can cure the breast cancer by using the breast cancer medications.
