One of more common kinds of cancer is colorectal cancer and March of each year is observed as Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month when efforts are made to increase awareness about the causes, risk factors, preventive measures and treatment options for this disease.
According to some experts, about 90% of these cancers are preventable and in this 12th colorectal cancer awareness month, we take the opportunity to clear up some myths about colon cancer:
1. If there is no history of colon cancer in the family I don’t need to worry. In fact only 20% of colon cancer cases occur in people with a family history of the disease.
More than 70% colon cancers have seemingly no reason.
2. Colon cancer screening is painful and embarrassing. Since the person is sedated through the procedure, and it lasts only between 15 and 30 minutes, there is little pain, embarrassment or even memory of it.
Besides, there should be nothing embarrassing about looking after your own health.
3. My colonoscopy was clear so I have no worries for the future. Colonoscopy is not a perfect procedure, and each and every tumor may not be detected and any signs and symptoms of colon cancer (changes in frequency of bowel movement, blood in stool etc) must not be ignored.
4.These is little one can do to lower colon cancer risk. This is the biggest myth of all, since there is so much that will lower the risk – exercising, eating non-processed and natural foods, eating the right kind of fats, lowering intake of salt and red meat; particularly deli meats, giving up smoking etc can all hugely lower colon cancer risk.
Fiber supplements prevent colon cancer. It may be a good idea to take a fiber supplement but this doesn’t mean that you ignore a good and healthy diet and skip out on the exercise program; these are far more important to prevent colon cancer.
