Mesothelioma Lung Cancer

Mesothelioma lung cancer  is a disease in which malignant (cancer) cells are found in the pleura which is a thin layer of tissue that lines the chest cavity and covers the lungs or the peritoneum which is a thin layer of tissue that lines the abdomen and covers most of the organs in the abdomen.

Mesothelioma lung cancer shows no symptoms in its early stages. When the disease has reached its advanced stage then the symptoms are shown. Usually when the disease is diagnosed it is predicted that it is in its advanced stage.

The most common symptoms are shortness of breathe, pain in the chest while breathing, dry cough, weight loss, lumps in the tissues of the chest.

Causes of Mesothelioma Lung Cancer

The main cause of mesothelioma lung cancer is the exposure to the asbestos substance. The person will not experience any symptoms on exposure to asbestos in the initial stage, this will turn fatal in due course of time say in many years. The other main cause of this disease in very few cases is a virus.

Mesothelioma Lung Cancer Prognosis

Mesothelioma lung cancer prognosis like any other cancer depends totally on the stage of the cancer, the extent of the tumor and the overall health of the patient. Like in any other cancer the mesothelioma lung cancer survival depends on how early it is diagnosed and how promptly and aggressively it is treated.

The main drawback of this disease is that it diagnosed in an advanced stage as the disease shows no symptoms in its early stage. Because of this the outlook is very poor. Generally the survival time after diagnosis is about one year. (Mesothelioma Lung Cancer Cure)

In some cases, survival time can be increased to two to five years or more with early detection and aggressive treatment. Improved treatments should be available in the near future.

Mesothelioma Lung Cancer Survival Rate

The survival rate statistics of mesothelioma lung cancer is difficult to find as this cancer is not so common. Although there are two types of mesothelioma lung cancer the prognosis for both the types.

When the disease starts showing symptoms it is well understood that it has reached its advanced stage. Very few cases are diagnosed in their early stages. Because of this there are no reliable statistics for 5 year early stages of mesothelioma lung cancer survival rate.

Unfortunately for both types of mesothelioma lung cancer, the survival rate for patients is often said to be less than a year. Generally, of all those people diagnosed with mesothelioma lung cancer only about 1 in 10 will be alive for after 3 years also and 1 in 20 will be alive even for 5 years and more.
