Multiple Myeloma Symptoms

Multiple myeloma symptoms may help you in detecting the disease earlier, which can make it easy to cure.

The exact cause of multiple myeloma is yet to be discovered. Many researches still go on to know what causes this dreadful disease.

Doctors and specialists still do not know the reason why a person gets this disease and why another doesn’t. Although the cause is unknown the multiple myeloma is confirmed to be not contagious meaning it does not spread through contact or touch from person to person.

However the research has given certain risk factors of multiple myeloma which may be a threat to develop this disease. The presence of these risk factors in a person increases the chance of developing the disease when compared to the person without any risk factors. Therefore, let us first know the risk factors, before knowing the multiple myeloma symptoms.

Risk Factors of Multiple Myeloma

The risk factors of multiple myeloma include the following:

Age: This is considered as one of the risk factors. Increasing age also increases the chance of developing multiple myeloma. This is proved by the fact that majority of the cases are diagnosed in people over 40 years of age. Less than this age the changes of occurrence of the disease is quite rare.

Race: Though the occurrence of this disease is low in the Asian Americans it is high in the African Americans. The reason for the difference between racial groups is not known.

People with a personal history of monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) are also said to be at high risk of developing the disease. This condition is described as the growth of abnormal plasma cells. They are said to be abnormal as they make a low level of M proteins.

Therefore people with this condition are said to consult doctor for further diagnosis or time to time screening tests in order to avoid further complications. Unfortunately in most of the cases it is detected that these people who have the risk factors don’t get the disease but rather people without any risk factors are affected.

Apart from the above mentioned risk factors scientists are studying for other reasons which may lead to developing the multiple myeloma. Though radiation, pesticides, hair dye, certain viruses, obesity, and diet are doubted to be responsible to develop the disease no such evidences are available to show the link.
