World Cancer Day Focuses On Cancer-Infection Link

hpv vaccineWith there being a widespread recommendation to use the HPV vaccine to prevent cervical cancer and hepatitis B vaccine to prevent liver cancer, there is now an increasing focus among oncologists to try and understand the way that certain infections increase the risk of certain cancers.

The recently concluded World Cancer Day, focused on the issue of finding the link between infections and cancers.

This cancer network report speaks about the emphasis that was placed on protection against 9 infections that are seen to cause cancer.

“Of the 12 million people who are diagnosed with cancer each year, around 20% of cases can be attributed to viral and bacterial infections that either directly cause or increase the risk of cancer,” said Prof. David Hill, UICC President.
