Motherhood Possible After Ovary Transplant In Cancer Patient

ovary transplant patientIn tale that will possibly give hope and courage to many, Denmark’s Stinne Holm Bergholdt, who was diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma, a type of bone cancer, has subsequently given birth to two babies.

According to the reports, she has become the first woman in the world to give birth twice after an ovary transplant.

When she learned of her cancer, Bergholdt decided to have part of her right ovary frozen. This was done since the chemotherapy she would receive for her bone cancer would cause her to have an early menopause.

Subsequently she had her frozen ovary transplanted and became pregnant with Aviaja, her first daughter by in vitro fertilization. Even more amazing was that she became pregnant again, naturally this time and gave birth to her second daughter Lucca.

This is a heartwarming story about personal courage, and enterprise, and the refusal to consider a life over due to the advent of cancer.  You can not only freeze time by freezing ovaries and later transplanting them, you can also have chemo beat your cancer without it beating you!
